Combe Ridge is a large country house set in its own 18 acres situated in An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty close to the village of Chiddingfold. It is a family home with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The south facing bedrooms have far reaching views of Blackdown - the 2nd highest hill in Surrey - and sheep graze in the fields beyond the garden. Brenda Essex offers either a full English or continental breakfast with her own chickens providing free range eggs. There is ample parking. Combe Ridge is a short distance from the mainline station to London and towns of Guildford, Godalming and Haslemere. There are innumerable walks and gardens to visit including a delightful Gertrude Jekyll garden at Vann, Hambledon.

Guildford is a large town with its own University of Surrey, cathedral and ancient castle ruin. The town bustles with coffee bars and restaurants and is famous for its shops and the ancient clock that hangs above the cobbled High Street at the Old Guildhall. The Yvonne Arnaud theatre, the Old Mill Studio and Electric Theatre guarantee a variety of plays and musicals to suit most people. there are also 9 cinemas. Godalming is an historic town with many pubs and places to eat. Boats can be taken on the River Wey from Dapdune Wharf and further down at Farncombe. Close by is Secretts, a fine garden centre with restaurant. They also have a pick your own and farm shop where all produce is organic and mostly grown on the farm plus an excellent selection of gourmet food for sale, wonderful bread, cheeses and tea room. A farmers' market takes place each month and every other summer an amazing Thai festival is staged.

Haslemere is just 5 miles away and is a picturesque town with a variety of quality shops, book shop, toy shops and others. There are several restaurants and the newly refurbished Georgian Hotel. A little further away is Goodwood House, a fine 18thC house and home to horse and car racing. The Festival of Speed takes place on June 25-27. The festival celebrates present day Formula One and cars spanning the last 100 years. The Revival at Goodwood is Sept 3-5 and incorporates historical car races. At Cowdray, Midhurst there are polo matches during the summer months. Fifteen minutes away from Combe Ridge is the old town of Petworth and the 17thC mansion Petworth House and Park. There are plenty of attractions here including kite flying festivals, picnics, open air drama and concerts. Petworth House was a favourite place to stay for artist JMW Turner and many of his paintings are on view. Petworth House and Uppark are both fine National Trust houses and well worth visiting.
