Founded in 1888 by Sir Jonathan Hutchinson, the museum has 3 galleries devoted to Natural History, Geology and Human History. Specimens are exhibited from the animal kingdom, fossils, plants, insects and also artefacts from ancient civilisations and Stone Age Britain, with old favourites such as Arthur the Bear and the ancient Egyptian mummy. There is also a full programme of events and exhibitions. The garden and grounds have an observation beehive, herb garden, pond and gazebo. The historic layout also contains a curved ha-ha and some unusual trees and shrubs.
