Set in the rolling North Downs in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, historic and atmospheric Loseley Park is a great place for a day out. A stunning historic house visited several times by Elizabeth I and by subsequent monarchs and still owned by the More-Molyneux family, one of whose ancestors built it in 1562. It retains the warmth and welcome of a family home, with 3 generations of the family living there today, and is filled with fine works of art, furniture and fittings. These include furniture from the 16thC and panelling from Henry VIII’s Nonsuch Palace.
Other items of special interest in the Great Hall are George IV’s coronation chair in which the Sovereign was anointed as spiritual head and stunning carving on the Minstrels Gallery by Grinling Gibbons. Guided tours of the house explain the history and relate some of the fascinating stories surrounding the family.
The Walled Garden, compared favourably to other gardens of national repute, has been restored over the last 10 years and now features 5 wonderful gardens each with its own theme and character. These include the award-winning rose garden planted with over 1000 old-fashioned rose bushes, a herb garden – one of the largest and most exciting projects of its kind in recent years, a flower garden providing a blaze of colour through the season, a white garden and an organic vegetable garden.
Other features include the magnificent wisteria, the mulberry tree believed to have been planted by Elizabeth I, and newly planted in 2006, a flower meadow. Lawns in front of Loseley House extend to parkland that leads down to a lakeside walk. Other facilities open to the public include a plant sales area where plants and herbs grown in the garden can be purchased, a delightful courtyard on-site tearoom for light lunches, snacks and afternoon tea and a very well stocked gift shop.
Most areas accessible to disabled visitors.
