Stoke D’Abernon is a small village beside the River Mole. The village was recorded in the Doomsday Book and St Mary’s Church is the oldest in Surrey. The church has a rich collection of brasses, with two famous knights dating from 1326 and c.1350.
The village is named after the D’Abernons who came to England as knights retainers to the Clare family, who served William the Conqueror. The Clares were rewarded for their part in the conquest with land in Surrey and Sussex, some of which they passed on to their followers including the Manor of Stoke which was given to the D’Abernons. Stoke D’Abernon is now the home of Chelsea Football Club’s training grounds.

A peaceful settlement on the banks of the Thames, Thames Ditton is close to both the green Surrey countryside and the bussle of London. The shops of Kingston are also closeby. The towpath beside the Thames looks across to the historic Hampton Court Palace.
The Thames Ditton Miniature Railway, is run by the Malden District Society of Model Engineers Ltd., and this is where they operate their two independent railways, both of which are used for passenger hauling. Open days are held from 13.00 on Easter Sunday and Monday, then the first Sunday of the month and every bank holiday Sunday and Monday until the first Sunday in October.
