Gatton Park
Type: Garden
The Gatton Park estate is one of Surrey’s hidden treasures. Over the years its many private owners worked with the great landscape designers of their day to create a captivating mix of gardens and parkland. The parkland, which was laid out Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, was designed when he was at the height of his notoriety and was one of his biggest commissions. Brown cleverly utilised the sinuous curves of the North Downs to create a work of great beauty on an imposing scale. The Victorian and Edwardian periods saw the addition of a number of pleasure gardens, including a rock & water garden and an exotic ‘Japanese’ garden.
After a period of neglect, the park and gardens are being lovingly restored by the staff and volunteers of The Gatton Trust. Since 1996 many of the key features have been brought back to life. The newly restored parterre is our latest piece of restoration and it has reinstated what is widely regarded as one of the finest view in the county.
Gatton Park provides something to see throughout the year from stunning displays of snowdrops in February, dramatic spring & summer displays to striking autumn colour in the parkland. We also have a busy events schedule throughout the year; see our website for more details. We are open the first Sunday of the month February to October and for regular guided tours every Tuesday & Thursday.
