The Savill Garden hosts Surrey Sculpture Society’s Autumn Sculpture Exhibition
2nd October 2019
Categories: Inspirational Features
The Surrey Sculpture Society is looking forward to rounding off their 25th Anniversary year with a major exhibition at ‘The Savill Garden’ at Englefield Green, near Egham, Surrey. The 35 acre gardens are located at the Crown Estate within the boundaries of Windsor Great Park. The sculpture event will open on 25th September and run until 24th November, three weeks longer than the Society’s exhibition at ‘The Savill Garden’ last year.
Henriette van der Does, Chair of the Surrey Sculpture Society commented:
“The SSS is delighted to be asked to return to ‘The Savill Garden’ at the Crown Estate to present our Society’s sculpture event for the second year running. We are also pleased to offer visitors an extended exhibition with 64 pieces this year. The beautifully maintained garden with the vibrant autumn colouring and intimate spaces offers our design team a varied background to set off the various styles, forms and materials of sculpture in the best possible way. The meeting between art and nature I find magical and we will manage to make magic again at ‘The Savill Garden’. I can only recommend everyone go and see the show. All work is for sale but just enjoying the exhibition will be uplifting.”
The event will feature sculptures created by members of the Surrey Sculpture Society, who range from new and emerging sculptors to internationally acclaimed sculptors from across the South of England. They have produced affordable and original sculptures made from a wide range of materials that can form eye-catching focal points in gardens, conservatories and interiors. All works will be for sale during the event.
Visitors to the gardens will discover over 64 sculptures carefully positioned throughout various areas including the Hidden Gardens, Spring Wood, Summer Gardens, New Zealand Garden, Summer Wood, The Glades, Autumn Wood and the Winter Beds. Further sculptures will be on display in The Queen Elizabeth Temperate House and inside The Savill Building. The works of art will complement the many unusual plants and trees from across the globe.
John Anderson, Keeper of the Gardens in Windsor Great Park commented:
“It is a special year to be hosting the Surrey Sculpture Society, as they celebrate their 25th anniversary, and we have decided to extend the duration of the displays in The Savill Garden after the great success of the exhibition in 2018. We invite our regular visitors and new audiences to come to experience this combination of artistic and horticultural excellence in one of the most beautiful gardens in the country.”
The sculpture exhibition will be designed by SSS sculptor, Denise Jaques, who will be collaborating closely with The Savill Garden’s Michelle Cleave and Heather King on the positioning of the sculptures.
Michelle Cleave, Supervisor of The Savill Garden commented:
“It has been very exciting to work with the Surrey Sculpture Society again, in realising an engaging collection of sculpture in the garden. The sculpture has been sensitively placed within this beautiful garden landscape and is an inspiration for the creative eye.”
As part of The Savill Garden’s Art in the Garden season there will also be paintings from amateur artists from Windsor Art Group exhibited in The Savill Building visitor centre.
