Mizens Railway (Woking Miniature Railway Society)

Mizens Railway is a fun passenger-carrying miniature railway situated in a uniquely delightful 10-acre woodland site in Knaphill conveniently near Woking in Surrey.  We operate every Sunday from 1st May to 30th September, with special events including New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday, Visiting Locos Weekend, Knaphill Village Show, School-hols August Thursday, 1940s Day, the Autumn Gala and Santa Specials. In addition, Mizens also runs several private events for charity and is pleased to support several charities.

Operating on a track gauge of 7¼ inches, visitors enjoy the railway’s choice of routes for train rides., the longer ones being nearly 1 mile in length. Unlike many other miniature railways we normally operate two alternative rides: the shorter "Suburban" route (about a 7-10 minute ride), and one of our two longer routes, "Miler" or "Highlander".

A variety of locomotives are in use, including several steam, electric, petrol and diesel engines. We have a variety and choice of passenger carriages, offering both comfortable sit-in or sit-astride seating.  And on some of our special event days we may also run our short-hop “Duckpond Flyer” and visitor may also see demonstration goods/freight trains.

Woking Miniature Railway Society was founded in 1989, most commonly known at the time as Mizens Farm until McLaren Racing Team purchased our old site in 1999, we then moved to our current site in Barrs Lane in 2000, when we became Mizens Railway.

The railway is owned by Woking Miniature Railway Society Ltd and its entire operation is run by all its volunteer members. We currently have about 100 members, many of whom operate the railway on the numerous days that we are open. There are many ways volunteers help at Mizens Railway; new members are always welcome and needed: on running days as Drivers, Guards, Signallers, staff on the Station, in the Ticket Office, Engine & Carriage Sheds, Tea Room and Shop staff, and as First Aiders and Safety Officers. Through the week there are plenty of things to do, like joining our P-Way team or Buildings team develop & maintain our track & structures, gardening with the Landscaping team, or Engineering to maintain our locos and rolling-stock.

The Society also has a Modelers Section which builds model railways in a variety of scales including UK 00 and UK N gauges and operates & exhibits them at local model railway shows.

Membership is open to anyone who would like to join our activities and we would be keen to hear from anyone interested - male or female, adult or junior (under 18). No previous experience is necessary (although certain skills would be particularly welcomed!).
