Woking's Platinum Jubilee Celebrations
In June, Her Majesty the Queen will become the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, having acceded to the throne on 6 February 1952 and completed 70 years of service.
To mark this historic milestone, there will be an extended bank holiday from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 June, which will provide an opportunity for communities to come together to celebrate.
In the first event of the four-day platinum celebrations, more than 1,500 beacons will be lit by community and charity groups across the UK to celebrate.
As the sun sets on 2 June, join us in Jubilee Square Woking for a unique opportunity to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen and her achievements. Members of frontline and emergency services are particularly invited to this event, to enable the community to publicly thank them for their dedication and hard work during the pandemic. A piper will lead the ceremony, playing ‘Diu Regnare’, which will be followed by the Mayor lighting Woking’s Beacon. Christ Church has organised a collective group of choirs to sing the official song of the Commonwealth at the occasion.
In Woking’s communities, people are invited to share 'friendship, food and fun' with neighbours as part of The Big Lunch Jubilee celebrations. Villages are already preparing their street parties, with plans in the town centre for those who prefer to celebrate at a restaurant or pub. In addition, local historians are planning talks and walks to highlight the changes across Woking during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. In Woking Town Centre, Jubilee Square will host the return of its popular summer activity area. Visitors can relax on deck chairs and soak up the atmosphere, while a big screen airs the best Jubilee-related highlights and family-friendly films. Or try your hand at one of the free activities on offer, like giant chess or table tennis.
Pubs, bars and restaurants will also be joining in the celebrations, and eating areas will be set up to create a street party atmosphere in the heart of the town. Enjoy a menu fit for a queen, or sip your afternoon tea on the terrace while enjoying a slice of cake.
