About
Zeba Imam's work is inspired by the marks of human activity all around us. Bustling cityscapes, timeworn aspects of an industrial building, casual graffiti... They convey the universal human wish to be seen and to communicate: I am/was here.
Over the last year, Zeba has been focussing both on refining her existing work and exploring the metaphor of palimpsest further. Palimpsest refers to the layered quality of all human experience. Zeba is guided by clay's nature letting the mark making be less controlled. Zeba attempts to capture the accidental nature of layers on forgotten surfaces and the stories they inadvertently tell.
Zeba works from her studio at Spode Works, which was once the centre of industrial pottery in England, a sprawling, heritage building bearing the marks of the past - a source of inspiration for her work. Zeba is the winner of the Rising Stars 2022 Maker's Award.
Rising Stars 2023
Rising Stars is a curated, national platform to foster and champion new talent, early career makers, students and graduates from BA and MA crafts, design and applied arts programmes across the UK. Rising Stars offers new makers a first step into the marketplace, through a curated, selling exhibition. It is also an exciting collector opportunity for those wishing to support and collect work by future stars.
The programme will consist of the Rising Stars exhibition that enables new makers to access the marketplace and collectors; professional development, and a catalogue to act as a promotional tool for the selected makers. The 2023 project will also be supporting new makers, impacted by the current cost of living crisis.
The judges in 2023 are Dan Goode (Making Goode), Dr Outi Remes (New Ashgate), Sharon Ting (UCA) and Debra Allman (UCA).
One of the makers will be presented a professional development award of £1,000 and a solo exhibition at New Ashgate in 2024.
