Surrey Heath

Nestled in a corner of Surrey, on the border of both Hampshire and Berkshire, Camberley is one of the busiest gateways into the county.  The main town in the borough of Surrey Heath has a proud history of association with the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.  With an expansive vision for the future of the town centre, it maintains its heritage while also looking forward.

A compact and convenient town, Camberley has plenty of parking, a good mix of independent shops and high street names as well as a purpose built, modern entertainment complex featuring a wide selection of restaurants, cinema and bowling.

Underneath the modern and thriving exterior lies a historic and peaceful Borough much removed from the busy and bustling atmosphere of the main town of Camberley.

The villages of Bagshot, Bisley, Chobham, Deepcut, Frimley, Frimley Green, Lightwater, Mytchett, West End and Windlesham have an incredible history starting in the neo-lithic period, moving to bronze age burial mounds and a Roman site that continued to be occupied in the Saxon period, a Royal hunting ground at Bagshot Park in the 14th century and notorious highway men in the 17 and 18th centuries.  Beautiful 16th century pubs, farmhouses and cottages that survive today and tales of the notorious highway-man Dick Turpin bring to life the fascinating history of the area.

Chobham Common is the largest National Nature Reserve in the south-east of England and one of the finest remaining examples of lowland heath in the world. The few surviving heathlands are very special places providing a living link to our stone-age past.  Over 300 species of wild flower grow here and its home to 100 different bird species.  There are frogs, toads, newts, adders, grass snakes, common and sand lizards, slow worms and 25 species of mammal, foxes, deer and, rare water voles.

Chobham Common is recognised as one of the best British sites for insects and spiders. It is the premier site for ladybirds, bees, wasps and 22 types of dragonfly.  Some 29 species of butterfly live here, among them the rare silver studded blue.  Surrey Heath area is named after the heathland itself, which defines much of the beautiful character of the area.

Surrey Heath has a small, lively and attractively-presented museum with a busy programme of events and exhibitions.  Entry is free and the heathland story is a permanent display.

The Camberley Theatre offers a programme of high quality music, dance, film, comedy and children’s shows including an annual pantomime. It is also a conference centres and community hub.

Frimley Lodge Park is an winning Green Flag park on the Basingstoke Canal, with a café, a miniature railway, pitch and putt, community garden, BBQ hire, play areas and sports pitches.
