FAMOUS CONNECTIONS TO GUILDFORD

Alice in Wonderland
Lewis Carroll spent much time in Guildford visiting his six unmarried sisters. They lived at ‘The Chestnuts’ near to the remains of Guildford Castle.
His second Alice book ‘Through the Looking Glass’ was completed whilst he was staying in Guildford in 1871.
Sadly, he became unwell on one of his visits and is buried at The Mount Cemetery.

 

Alan Turing is renowned as the father of modern computing and a significant figure in the development of AI. He is also famous for his code-breaking achievements during the Second World War. 

Guildford was his family home.  He grew up in the town and continued to visit family throughout his life.
