Experience days to remember in Surrey
At the start of a new year, many people’s thoughts turn to new adventures, hobbies and experiences for the months ahead – and, as always, Visit Surrey is here to help inspire you with some of the must-try options to add to your list for 2022.
Whether you’ve lived in Surrey all your life or you’re looking to visit from elsewhere in the UK or abroad, read on to discover some of the best experience days and activities in Surrey - from llama walking and wine tasting to escape rooms and woodland wonders.
Llama walking in the Surrey Hills
There’s walking in the countryside and then there’s walking in the countryside. The Merry Harriers in Hambledon is an idyllic country pub with rooms and shepherds’ huts, but it’s also home to a friendly herd of llamas who love nothing more than a stroll in the countryside. Trekking options include an English picnic trek; morning and evening walks; and group bookings for children’s birthday parties, business away days and celebratory occasions such as hen weekends.
Tackling the challenge of escape rooms
With interactive live escape rooms, Paradox Parlours in Guildford and Dorking are the perfect activity for families, friends and colleagues. Gather up a team of two to six players and work together to discover clues, solve cryptic puzzles and race against time to complete the challenges as you channel your inner secret agent.
Try a woodland walk with a difference
As England’s most wooded county, it’s perhaps unsurprising that some of the most fun experience days in Surrey include heading into the woods and swinging through the treetops. You can zip from heights, clamber across rickety bridges and test your balance on the tightropes at Skywalk Adventure, all while enjoying breath-taking views over dry ski slopes and Sandown Park racecourse.
If you prefer to keep your feet on the floor, then head to Campaign Paintball and Laser Park, near Cobham, where you’ll find realistic themed sets including a Wild West town, World War One trenches, a 30ft ‘Zombie’ tower, a jungle zone and more.
Visit wonderland at a sculpture park
Also hidden away in our county’s woodlands, you’ll find spectacular sculpture parks – inspiring destinations to be enjoyed at a much slower pace. The Sculpture Park in Churt is open 365 days a year, while Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden at Ockley reopens for its 2022 season in April. Both feature eye-catching and diverse art installations as well as picturesque walking paths.
Take flight on Concorde
As well as exploring motorsport and aviation history at Brooklands Museum in Weybridge, you can also enjoy a Concorde experience. More than 30% of each of the 20 Concorde airframes were manufactured by the British Aircraft Corporation at Brooklands during the 60s and 70s, and the Weybridge museum is home to the only Concorde with public access in south east England. Re-live the excitement of the supersonic age with a fascinating 25-minute tour.
Go for a spin in a classic car
Classic motoring is all about that tug on the heart strings, and RNG Classics near Reigate offer classic car hire in Surrey with an enviable collection of timeless and iconic classic automobiles for self-drive. Live it up for a weekend, pack up a picnic, dress up for the occasion and drive like a film star in the Surrey Hills.
Learn the ropes of water sports
Recent years have seen many of Surrey’s former quarries transformed into wetland and water sport paradises. One such location is Mercers Country Park, near Redhill, where Aqua Sports Company is based. Here you can learn how to sail, windsurf, stand-up paddleboard and more.
Discover Surrey on the river
Did you know that some of the prettiest places in Surrey are best seen by boat? You can learn about the history of Surrey’s waterways and enjoy a relaxing boat trip at Dapdune Wharf near Guildford. Or how about hiring an eco-friendly picnic boat via GoBoat to explore the Thames?
Wine tasting at a Surrey vineyard
With terroir that matches the Champagne region of France, Surrey’s vineyards produce internationally award-winning English wines – as well as offering a beautiful destination for a seasonal walk. Denbies Wine Estate in Dorking, Albury Organic Vineyard at Albury and Greyfriars Vineyard near Guildford all offer tours and tastings, as well as wine shopping opportunities.
Explore the local food and drink trail
As well as our county’s vineyards, there are an increasing number of breweries, distillers, coffee roasters and more popping up around Surrey (often in off the beaten track locations!) as well as the prominent farm shops. Try a Gin Lab experience at Wessex Distillery at Wormley; enjoy chai on the patio or a cookery lesson with Mandira’s Kitchen; look ahead to pick-your-own season at Secretts; and more.
A spa retreat in the countryside
Whether you are looking for a spa break in Surrey or simply a day of indulgence, Surrey has some of the best spa hotels and retreats in Britain. From old manor houses to modern contemporary hotels, experience luxurious spa treatments, beautiful swimming pools and heavenly saunas, steam rooms and therapies as an escape from it all or a day out with friends.
